Shivaji Sawant

Shivaji Sawant (August 31, 1940 – September 18, 2002) was an acclaimed Indian writer in Marathi. He was born in a small farmer family of Aajra village in Kolhapur district. He worked with Rajaram Prashala, Kolhapur as a teacher for 20 years and afterwords as editor with Maharashtra education department's monthly magazine Lokshikshan for six years in Pune (1974 – 1980).

After extensive research he wrote a book Mrityunjay (English: Triumph Over Death) based on Karna, one of the leading characters of the epic Mahabharat. This book was translated in Hindi (1974), English (1989), Kannada (1990), Gujarati (1991), Malayalam (1995) and received numerous awards and accolades. In 1980 he wrote a book Chhava based on Sambhaji's life.

He held the post of the vice-president of Maharashtra Sahitya Parishad since 1995. He was president of Baroda Sahitya Sammelan in 1983.

Mr. Shivaji Sawant died of massive cardiac arrest in Goa while campaigning for the post of President of 76th 'All India Marathi Sahitya Sammelan'. He was one of the three contestants contesting for the post of President, the other two were Subhash Bhende from Mumbai and Jawahar Mutha from Aurangabad.

Early life

Khandekar was born in Sangli, Maharashtra. His father was a munsif in Sangli principality. In his early life, he was interested in acting in dramas and staged several dramas in his school days.
[edit] Professional and literary life

In 1920, Khandekar started working as a school teacher in a small town, Shirode, in the present-day Sindhudurg district of the Konkan region in Maharashtra. He worked in that school until 1938. While working as a teacher, Khandekar produced in his spare time abundant Marathi literature in various forms. In his lifetime, he wrote sixteen novels, six plays, around 250 short stories, 50 allegorical stories, 100 essays, and over 200 critiques.

In 1941, Khandekar was elected as the president of the annual Marathi Sahitya Sammelan (Marathi Literary Conference) in Solapur. In 1968, the Government of India honored him with a Padma Bhushan award in recognition of his literary accomplishments. Two years later, he was also honored with the fellowship of the Indian Sahitya Akademi. Shivaji University at Kolhapur, Maharashtra conferred on him an honorary degree of D.Litt. In 1998, the Government of India issued a commemorative postage stamp in his honor.
